P.S. The last newsletter announced the closing of the long-running History Quest children's exhibit and featured two of the children in the exhibit. The childhood stories of the four people below can also be found in History Quest.

Gilbert Chapman (1909-1997) grew up on the Lac du Flambeau reservation and lived most of his life in the village of Lac du Flambeau. Both his mother and father were from mixed heritage families. He went to public school and Indian boarding schools as a child, including his 7th grade year at the Mt. Pleasant Indian Boarding School in Michigan. Gilbert's story was gleaned from his 1996 oral history interview published in Memories of  Lac du Flambeau Elders (2004). ....

Gilbert Champman as an adult. We never found a childhood photo of Gilbert.

John Vodacek (1925-2012) was born in Chicago to Czech immigrant parents. In the 1930s, the family moved up to a farm near New Auburn in Chippewa County. John Vodacek’s memoirs helped tell his bring his story to life in History Quest.

John Vodacek, about age 9, 1934.

Neng Vang and Jou Lor – Neng Vang Lor (b.1961) and Jou Moua (b.1963) were born in neighboring villages in northern Laos. As young adults, they fled with their families into the jungle after American military forces pulled out of southeast Asia at the end of the Vietnam War. The Lors escaped to Thailand in 1984 with two young daughters and were able to resettle in Eau Claire in 1987 after three years in a refugee camp. Their History Quest story concentrates on their lives in Laos prior to war.
