MUSEUM HAPPENINGS

August 25, 2023

Back-to-school season is upon us. UW-Eau Claire freshmen concluded their orientation and registration last week and our local K-12 school district resumes classes next week. Students from Cameron, Medford, Fall Creek and more are looking forward to their fall field trips to Chippewa Valley Museums.

Not all of us are going "back to school" this season. Instead, we're looking for a new favorite book to curl up with, enjoying fall sports and the continuing baseball season, and visiting Carson Park's reconstructed 1890s logging camp before it closes for the winter. There is news below connected to each of these items on your school-season agenda, so read on!

New: Online Bookstore, Title from CVM Press

Chippewa Valley Museums launched a new online store starting with a selection of books featured in the gift shops. More items will be added in the future. Use the button below, or visit cvmuseum.com and select "Store" to begin searching for titles. All orders are available for shipping or pickup during museum operating hours.

Among the titles you'll find in the online store is Reflections of Eau Claire: A Photo History of the City, 1870-1998. This new publication from Chippewa Valley Museum Press was co-authored by CVM Archivist Jodi Kiffmeyer and CVM Editor & Assistant Curator Diana Peterson. Find the book in-person at Chippewa Valley Museums gift shops and at The Local Store. A grant from the Eau Claire Community Foundation supported this publication.

Play Ball! Exhibit Expansion

Baseball stories from around the Chippewa Valley

on view now through December 30th

Play Ball! exhibit gallery, now featuring additional baseball stories and artifacts from throughout the Chippewa Valley.

In this new expansion of our Play Ball! exhibit, visitors will get to know the Menomonie Blue Caps and their 1860s "base ball" rules, Andy Pafko and his 1952 Topps baseball card, Burleigh Grimes and his spit ball, and how the Vavra boys grew up with a passion for baseball.

When you visit, you'll learn the story of the Chippewa River Baseball League that has been playing ball since 1908, cheer on the Herald Reporters (Chippewa Falls' WWII-era women's softball team), and watch a Hallie baseball program grow from a small leased field to a major complex with seven fields.

This exhibit is included with regular admission to the Chippewa Valley Museum and will be open until December 30, 2023.

Last Chance to Visit Wisconsin Logging Museum's 1890s Logging Camp This Season

logging museum remains open through September 30, 2023

A look inside one of the logging camp buildings on the museum campus.

In the 1890s, loggers worked twelve-hour days for $1 a day. When you visit the cook shanty, bunkhouse, blacksmith shop, and barn, you get a glimpse of life as a lumberjack. Visitors can explore the logging camp buildings as part of their museum experience through September 30th. After Labor Day, the Wisconsin Logging Museum will be open Wednesday through Saturday noon - 5:00pm.

Group tours and field trips to the logging camp are available into October, after which the buildings will be secured for winter.

350 museum visitors on Family Day during Chainsaw

The US Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship featured thirteen competition carvers from around the world actively creating beautiful masterpieces with a nature theme over the course of a four-day event.

During Family Day on August 12, in the midst of chainsaws buzzing and sawdust flying, additional art and activities included balloon creations, juggling, facepainting, and a new mural painted on the side of Chippewa Valley Museums' main building. Beaver Creek Reserve representatives even shared some wooden "sculptures" created by animal "artists."

More than 180 volunteers made the entire 4-day event possible. We want to offer special thanks to the Chippewa Valley Council Boy Scouts Troop 31 who volunteered to host a variety of outdoor games as part of the Family Day experience.

On Family Day alone, more than 350 people visited museum exhibits. Almost 80% of these people were first-time visitors.

Volunteer for "sweeping changes" at the museum

Visiting Chippewa Valley Museum and Wisconsin Logging Museum, you see how beautifully curated all the exhibits are. What you don’t see is the cleaning that goes on behind the scenes by our dedicated volunteers.

Saturday, September 9 from 9-11am is our next quarterly cleaning date. Be a superhero and fight dust bunnies and cobwebs so the museum exhibits sparkle once again. If you would like to join this team, let us know by completing our Volunteer Interest Form.

We also need volunteer support with field trips, welcoming visitors at CVM's front desk, and photography for marketing and events. To volunteer, complete the online form or connect with Tim (t.hirsch@cvmuseum.com).

During these remaining summer days, may the roads you travel be smooth and your beverages be chilled to perfection.

Peace,

P.S. My summer vacation postscript comes from New England this year, Charlestown, Rhode Island, to be precise. It’s my first time in New England, and the region didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed seeing centuries-old graveyards, Revolutionary War sites, Gilded Age mansions, historic city neighborhoods, and remnants of Rust Belt industrial decline. In my absence, the Chippewa Valley Museums kept humming right along, serving all the tourists who stopped in the Chippewa Valley to discover OUR history. I’m looking forward to getting back to the hard work of making history fun and accessible for everyone.
